Mother Tongue...Is Singapore Willing To Drop Sacrifice???

Recent news talked about MOE deciding whether to lower the weightage of Mother Tongue language in PSLE. This let me to think; if we really do that, would students still be encouraged to study the language? Would this let to future Singaporeans not being able to have a good understanding of the language and also thus making Singaporeans not being able have an advantage which we initially had...

Many parents are making a fuss about Mother Tongue language pulling their child's overall grades lower, thus not enabling them to enter a good class or even a good school that they intended.
I learnt that if all of your results were to be A's and your Mother Tongue got a D grade, your eventual result would not pass 200 points .This caused many parents to be worried about the future of their child being limited by the "un-important" language.

Singapore is on the tip of the Malaysia Peninsular and thus we heavily depend on trading between the East(China,Taiwan,Japan) and the West (US, EU). This makes us the middleman i believe, between the two. Thus the understanding and fluency of speaking the two language is important to Singapore. This was why MOE initially intended making Mother Tongue language important, thus giving us the advantage compared to other countries within this region.

I believe the weightage of Mother Tongue shouldn't be lower, cause Singapore should maintain this edge thus allowing Singapore to maintain as the priority choice of trading between the East and West.....

Colourful Bands... Careful What They Mean!!!

These colourful rubber/plastic bands are the hippest fashion accessories in town. However, do anyone really know the true meaning behind these bands?

I was watching the news last night and came across this news about a 13 year old Brazilian girl being raped by 3 teenagers. Police was called in and the teenagers reason for raping the girl was because she was wearing a black band of such and it broke.

This story got me interested i did some research on the net and came across a definition for this bands, on Urban-Dictionary.com. These bands are known as "sex-band"s or "sex-bracelets". They originated in the 90's and the idea is that depending on the colour, when the bands get broken, the person wearing that band is obliged to commit certain sexual acts.

Meanings Of Different Coloured Bands:

black: sexual intercourse
blue: oral
green: outdoor sex
clear: whatever the snapper wants
orange: kiss
yellow: hug
red: lap-dance
purple: full-on snog
white: flash
pink: love-bite
glow in the dark: using sex toys
gold: all of the above

Many Brazilian schools have already banned their students from wearing such bands. Some Brazilian states have also restricted selling such bands to people above the age of 18, to protect the minors.

Many teenagers in Singapore are also wearing such bands. But how many really do know the real meaning behind it? Or are they just following the trend, wearing these bands because many other teenagers are all wearing it?

Nevertheless, it would be wise to do some research on such accessories, and know the real meaning behind some of these accessories, before you wear them...

"No Food and Water.....No Problem For Me"

Prahlad Jani, an 83 year old holy-man from India claimed to have spent 7 decades without food or water, just by practicing a yoga routine.
The holy-man is now kept in a hospital in Ahmadabad, where he's being closely observed and tested by a team of 30 doctors.
Jani had not eaten or drank since 22nd April when the observation had started. He had been just practicing his set of yoga routine and also meditating; that have been providing him with energy.
India's defence and development organisation hope to harness this mystical ability, to help work strategies for survival during natural calamities and also during space explorations to the Moon and Mars.
Jani however had explained that his ability was granted by a goddess when he was eight. Thus enabling him to survive without food or water.
It will take 2 months more before researchers could discover his secrets or expose this fraud.
Therefore ladies and gentlemen, do you believe that one could survive without food and water ?
Well in my case, i could barely endure without eating for an entire day, not say 70 years....

Nuke Nuke Nuke.....

Singapore is considering nuclear power. This was the information i received from my dad when taking to him during a usual dad-son chat...

Wow...Nuclear power... The phrase felt strange. Remembering that the only time i actually heard or seen the phrase was from the computer game "Command n Conquer". In the game, China builds strong nuclear power plants to create energy for its nuclear weapon systems. This caused me to have a mis-conception about Nuclear power and nuclear power plants, thinking that it was only meant for weapons and war purposes.

I almost forgot about the issue until today at Effective Communications class when lecturer asked us to think of topics, to set us going for presentations. We eventually dropped the topic as it was to demanding and difficult to research on. However this sets me going and i decided to blog about this.

Thus, to fulfil my curiosity, i did some research on Wikipedia and also browsed through google. On Wikipedia, it says that nuclear power is energy produced from controlled nuclear reactions also known as nuclear fission. However , as i read on from an article on Straits-times, it reports that nuclear plants needs a 30km of buffer zone. This is also the thing that is limiting Singapore from deploying this project.

PM Lee has also said that hes not ruling out the idea as nuclear plants may be built undergrounds , ruling out the safety problems , or technology will improve and that the safety problem may change allowing Singapore to adopt the idea.

Some may fear that nuclear power plants emits nuclear radiations which is harmful to human bodies. However, there are currently unheard cases about this worry and that many countries are living well with nuclear energy.

The only problems left is, Singapore itself is not able to utilise the full about of energy created from each nuclear fission. This means that Singapore is using too little energy for us to use nuclear fission and that there will be excess energy left.

Well, I'm okay with nuclear power plants. As long as safety isn't compromised, i don't mind having cheaper electricity bills.
Hey guys, what do you think? Are you for or against Singapore using the power of nuclear to produce energy?

An Awesome Day!!!

Today was an awesome day. Had to say this because the rest of the week is really busy. Who actually say that poly students have a slack student life? Haha. I think poly life is exciting and vibrant! This may be why poly students seems to have more smiles on their faces as compared to Junior College students.(haha, little theory of Daniel)Daniel is starting to like his poly life , this may be due to his special class BM1005. :D

Its Friday today, and according to the time-table, school was suppose to start at 8am and end at 12pm. Gosh...its another of those early morning lessons that we were familiar with in secondary school. However this time its worst, its a early morning lecture for Accounting for Assets.

Woke up in the morning, fetched to school by my mom and attended the lecture. Lecturer seems like a nice guy, although he wasn't as funny as the rest of the lecturers, his lessons are nevertheless interesting. Learnt the concept of Accounting , the AED and LRC concepts and also the Credit v.s. Debit rule. Class eventually ended due to students being restless. Who could blame them, its a 2 hour lecture on a extremely "DRY" topic.

Thereafter as the Lecturer was also our tutor, we were asked to stay back in the lecture theatre. This was like adding salt to the already bleeding wound. Pain....Pain...Pain....
However, who would have knew that the lecturer was only trying to explain to us some of the rules and books that we have to buy. We were then released like 2 hours earlier. Wow, got to say....I Love the Lecturer...
We then went to McDonald's to have our breakfast, and the few of us went off to VivoCity for a movie. Shutter Island...

The movie Shutter Island, is a disappointment as we were expecting it to be a thriller genre film. However, it turns out to be some stupid psychological mystery film...Its about this man, who was a patient in this mad house island for 2 years, who killed his wife that killed his 3 children , thinking that he's discovering a dark secret of the mad house for illegally operating on patients' brains. He actually suffers from this mental illness that keeps inputting images into his brains , recycling the story of his trying to stop the mad house from operating on patients. Although we were disappointed, i was actually quite impressed with the plot.

After that we spent sometime sitting at "Kopitiam" chatting and eventually separated to return home... What a day....
Firstly, being able to end class early and secondly being able to spend time with my lovely classmates. Lovely day....

Daniel truly thank God for this wonderful day!!!
